Red Blend Pairing - Turkey Chili Recipe

Chili is the perfect dish to warm you up for a crisp fall night. It's hearty, versatile, and easy to make. There are so many variations of chili, from vegan, vegetarian, white chili, stew chili, no beans, with beans, spicy, and mild. We decided to make a turkey chili with kidney beans. We paired it with 19 Crimes Cali Red. The wine is very popular because it features Snoop Dogg but it is actually a really tasty Petite Sirah/Zinfandel Blend. The wine is a full-bodied wine with deep colors and high tannins. Petite refers to the size of the berries, which are small with a high skin-to-juice ratio. The wine pairs well with barbecued meats, roasted pork, and spicy and meat chili. The 19 Crimes Cali Red has strong notes of black and blue fruits. We enjoyed it because it wasn't overly dry and had a hint of sweetness at the finish.

Prior to drinking, we aerated our wine with our Magic Decanter Aerator. Perfect aeration can be achieved in the time it takes to pour a glass. ALL THE TASTE WITH NONE OF THE WAIT. Simply hold the Magic Decanter over a glass and pour wine through. Magic Decanter draws in and mixes the proper amount of air for the right amount of time, allowing your wine to breathe instantly. Now Let's get to the Recipe

Ingredients
1 pound ground turkey
1 medium onion
1/2 green pepper
1/2 yellow pepper
1 TBSP fresh garlic
1 can kidney beans
Olive oil (enough to saute veggies)
1 cup beef broth
1/4 cup water
20 or 28 ounce can of diced tomatoes (we used 2 cans of mild Rotel diced tomatoes with green chilis)
1 tsp cumin
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp oregano
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
2 TBSP chili powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
1 tsp brown sugar

Directions
1. Chop green & yellow peppers, garlic and onion into small pieces or use a food processor
2. Saute veggies with olive oil in a deep skillet or large sauce pan until soft (over medium heat)
3. Remove the veggies from the pot
4. Next cook turkey meat until brown
5. Re-add veggies and cook for another 5 minutes
6. Add the seasonings (cumin, paprika, oregano, cayenne pepper, chili powder, salt, pepper, and brown sugar)
- the easiest way is to mix all the seasoning together into a small bowl while the meat and veggies are cooking)
7. Add the tomatoes beef broth, water, and kidney beans to the meat. (Make sure you drain and rinse the kidney beans before adding)
- Note: If you have picky eaters... smash the kidney beans up and they will never know there are beans in the chili.
8. Bring the chili to a boil, cover and simmer for 1 hour. If you are crunched on time you can simmer for 30 minutes but 1 hour gives it the perfect flavor.

We served our chili with cornbread muffins, topped with sharp cheddar cheese, sour cream, and green onions

We hope you enjoy this chili and wine pairing! Please leave us a comment if you try this recipe or the wine!

Cheers!
